Free radicals (or oxidants) are reactor molecules that occur naturally in air around us (where they are generated by the action of UV radiation from the Sun) and form part of the oxygen we breathe in every day. Free radicals in our atmosphere are responsible for such diverse reactions as rusting (or oxidation) of metals and for the hardening of rubber for example car wiper blades by cross linking the individual rubber molecules.

Obviously free radicals have an effect on all living forms as well (plants and animals including humans) and the free radical theory of ageing is currently the most popular explanation for why we grow old.
